The dark leaved form of Tillandsia aeranthos. Grown in good light levels, ‘Nigra’ can become a very deep purple-black colour.
The flowers are typical aeranthos type, albeit a little darker; purple flowers from a pink inflorescence.

Such a lovely plant that has brought so many dear memories from my childhood in South America. Foliage, inflorescence and flowers all provide an incredible display of striking, vivid colours. I remember my grandmother had huge clumps of this particular variety of Aeranthos in her garden, naturally growing on the branches of all trees. They just kept flowering every year without any particular care. Thanks Craftyplants for letting me grow this gorgeous variety at home in the UK!
