Native to South Africa and Namibia where it is known as knoppies-beestong in Afrikaans and indvololwane in Swazi.
Under bright light, the leaves darken. In habitat this enables the plants to blend into the rocky soil. Traditional healers believe Gasteria to are able to transfer their camouflage properties to humans who wash with the leaves.
