The name selenite derives from the Greek word Selene which means moon.

Selenite is a form of gypsum which occurs as a transparent crystal.  It can be soft and easily scratched by a fingernail.  It can also be flexible and can bend with some gentle pressure.   In some very rare instances water can become trapped in cavities as the crystal forms and due to the way Selenite forms it can sometimes exhibit qualities of a fibre optic nature.

It is also referred to as Satin Spar.
